How to get rid of fruit flies in your kitchen: remove the breeding source first, then trap the adults. Simple tips from Roanoke’s Mill Mountain Pest Control. A vinegar trap may catch flies, but it will not solve the problem while fermenting food remains nearby.
DIY steps to try first
Find what is fermenting
Refrigerate ripe fruit and discard spoiled produce. Check forgotten potatoes, food waste, and sticky spills rather than focusing only on flies around the fruit bowl.
Clean overlooked sources
Rinse recycling containers and let them drain. Wash food-waste bins, and dry damp mops and towels that may hold food residue.
Make a small adult-fly trap
Put apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap in a jar. Cover it with tightly secured plastic wrap and poke a tiny entry hole. Keep the jar away from children and pets.
Not every tiny kitchen fly is a fruit fly. Persistent flies may need identification and a different source-control approach.
